How
to set up a geomantic chart
By Jakob Jelling

A geomantic chart is a form of divination based on sixteen signs which
comes from ancient dates although it doesn't have a clear date of origin.
Geomancy is used with similar purposes than astrology although it is very
different in its methods and applications, starting with the fact that
it uses sixteen symbols while astrology uses only twelve.
The sixteen symbols of geomancy and which are part of geomantic charts
are: carcer, tristitia, aquistio, laetitia, puer, rubeus, fortuna major,
fortuna minor, puella, amissio, conjunctio, albus, via, populus, caput
draconi, and dauda draconi. Each one of them is represented by a group
of four rows of dots, which combine one and two dots per row, and which
together make each symbol. If you wish to make your own geomantic chart,
you must have a table which shows you the group of dots which each symbol
contains. Once you have this, you need a clean white paper and a pen,
and you will be ready to start setting up your geomantic chart.
First of all, you have to think of a question. With that question in
mind, you have to write a row of dots of the length you wish and without
thinking of how many dots you are writing. You must repeat this sixteen
times, until you have sixteen rows of dots. Then, you must count each
row of dots and name it even or odd depending on the amount. Then, you
should write two dots next to each even row and one dot next to the odd
ones.
The sixteen rows of one and two dots will allow you to spot four main
signs which you must find comparing them with your table of symbols. Then,
you should take a new paper and write the spots which make these four
symbols in it. After you have done this, you are able to take the first
row of each one of them and together make what is called the first mother.
You should do the same with the second rows, the thirds, and the fourths.
Once you have discovered the first, the second, the third and the fourth
daughters, you must discover four nephews. The first nephew is discovered
by adding the dots of the first and second mother and counting if it is
either odd or even, which will give you the first row of the first nephew
by drawing one dot in case it is odd and two in case it is even. You must
repeat the operation with the subsequent rows of the same mothers until
you complete the nephew. The second nephew is discovered by following
the same procedure with the third and fourth mother, the third nephew
with the first and second daughter and the fourth nephew with the third
and fourth daughter.
After you have discovered the mothers, the daughters and the nephews
you will have twelve symbols which will allow you to find an answer for
your question. In order to complete the procedure and do this, you will
need to complete a chart which you will be able to build by completing
each one of its houses with the symbols you have discovered, for which
it is advisable to consult an expert if you do not have experience on
how to properly draw it and interpret it.
